Although decidedly upscale in selection of materials and plant size, this backyard is no larger than today's typical suburban backyard.  Rather than treating it like backyards of the past, the design relies on an urban model: warm paving (instead of turf) bounded by strategically placed hedges, trees and walls to manage views to and from neighbor's homes, and a water feature for sound privacy.  The result is an intimate, quiet, private, flexible and expandable extension of the indoors. No lawn, no vertical wood fencing, no foundation planting - this design fully recognizes that times - and our needs - have changed.
