The Mews Infill Housing
Reflecting the various influences on this oddly-shaped urban infill site in The Mission District of San Francisco, the design is a series of playful remnants - modern and traditional - connecting two parks with an internal pedestrian street. This space is private but encourages use much like old european alleys that grew organically over time and are a stage for life: playing, sitting, talking and walking. A place to mix and connect with their community, residents appreciate the variety of environments from "public" to intimate, seasonal change and a lush oasis in an urban setting.
Each space along the path is seperated by a screen of giant bamboo, accentuating mystery and playfulness, and emphasizing the different character of each area from shady urban forest to cobble street to remnant orange grove and formal parterre garden.
