Las Palmas Affordable Housing (on-the-boards)
Unexpected surprises make a project memorable.  The program for Las Palmas included street basketball, small trees and a park.  The basketball court was designed as a piazza - a gathering space raised to the level of the sidewalk.  In place of a literal basketball court, we proposed a grid of colored concrete panels that would be visually playful, yet provide the structure necessary to play basketball.  All small trees in the project are fruit-bearing - which is in-demand from prospective residents.  The required grade-change in the park was designed into a sculptural hillside - a theater pattern ideal for watching games - accentuated with a pattern of trees for visual interest as well as shade.
